Vor fast 40 Jahren, am 31. August 1970, wurde Leonard Cohen um 14 Uhr nachmittags aus einem Mittagsschläfchen in seinem Trailer geweckt und auf die Bühne gebeten. Es war sein erster Auftritt beim 3. jährlich stattfindenden Isle Of Wright Musikfestival. Die 600, 000 Besucher waren ausgelassen und die Stimmung aufgepeitscht, nachdem sie das Festival zu einem politischen Happening gemacht hatten:

Zäune wurden niedergetrampelt und Dinge angezündet. Außerdem war wenige Minuten vorher der explosivste Auftritt von Jimi Hendrix‘ Karriere, weniger als 3 Wochen vor seinem Tod, zu Ende gegangen und die Menge feierte ausgelassen.

Leonard Cohen nahm seinen Platz auf der Bühne ein und begann zu spielen. Die Meute wurde ruhig und verfolgte gebannt das Konzert. Joan Baez, Kris Kristofferson, Judy Collins und andere Headliner beobachteten ehrfürchtig vom Bühnenrand, wie der kanadische Folksinger-Songwriter-Poet-Schriftsteller die Menge bändigte. Alle enthaltenen Tracks sind bisher unveröffentlicht (außer Teilen von »Suzanne«).

Nearly 40 summers ago on August 31, 1970, 35-year-old Leonard Cohen was awakened at 2 a. m. from a nap in his trailer and brought onstage to perform with his band at the 3rd annual Isle Of Wight music festival. The audience of 600, 000 was in a fiery and frenzied mood, after turning the festival into a political arena, trampling the fences, setting fire to structures and equipment – and stoked by the most incendiary performance of Jimi Hendrix’s career, less than three weeks before his death.
